Frequently Asked Questions
Hi! I'm Sawteeth. I'm a 19 year old Korean who loves music!
Jungle Fatigue is a jungle/DnB label based in Seoul, South Korea. Our releases are free to download/stream on Bandcamp. We also periodically do physical releases on tapes and vinyl as well. We are probably best known for our Jungle Fatigue compilations which seem to get a lot of attention online.
While our sound is heavily inspired by oldskool jungle/DnB, our focus is not on recreating the past itself. We aim to make something future-proof just like how 90’s jungle/DnB is. We want the best of both worlds—staying cutting-edge while maintaining the classic, timeless vibe.
There isn’t a lot to say honestly as it’s all about the flow. Breaks and chords are good starting points if that helps. Sometimes I start with the melody when a good one pops up in my mind.
Usually I spend a lot of time(weeks, months or even years) on a single tune so I switch between projects frequently. Taking enough time allows me to find the best(or close to best) arrangement and combination of sound. However I know that many people are more productive when they work with shorter amount of time so go with whatever works for you.
I also play around with hardware gears(Atari ST, Akai S950, EMU E6400, Yamaha DX7, Mackie 1604 etc.) from time to time. They are really fun to use and they do add a certain flavor to the sound. However they(especially decades old gears) need regular maintenance which can be a pain. I think plugins such as RX950, TAL-DAC and Amigo should be good enough for most people who want that vintage texture.
I sample anything that sounds good. Soul, jazz, funk, rock, blues, reggae, electronic, pop… you name it. I enjoy sampling from obscure 45’s and CD’s. There are still tons of undiscovered samples out there!
To add I like to experiment with samples. You can do a lot with layering different sounds. For example, I could layer multiple synth samples at different pitch to form a chord. For another example, I could sample individual oneshots(kick, snare, hat, percussion etc.) from a bunch of different breaks and then rearrange/sequence them to create an entirely new break.
No. 1 right now would be "Abyss" by Mouly & Lucida. It's simple yet elegant; I especially like the unusual percussion/FX samples!
No. 2 is "Burning" by D.O.P.E. Personally I think it's a highly underrated piece that deserves more recognition. That beautiful synth intro is truly bone-chilling!
No. 3 is "The Way(V.I.P.)" by DJ Taktix. Heard this one for the first time listening through an old Vibealite set and this was the standout tune!
No. 4 is "Midnight" by J&J. A pretty obscure tune from '95 that I think is pure gold. Would love to have this one on vinyl some day!
No. 5 is "Why" by Livin-D. Crazy to think this tune came out in 1992, I'd say it was a couple years ahead from the rest!
Most of the work is done on stock M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It's not amazing spec-wise, nonetheless it has served me well for almost 5 years! I mostly use Logic Pro but I do use hardware from time to time when I feel like I just need that vibe. I have an Atari 520STE with 4MB of memory running Cubase 3.0 as an external MIDI sequencer. I also have some rackmount samplers including Akai S950, E-MU E6400 and Roland S-760. For processing I have a Mackie CR1604 mixer and some cheap rack effects. The Mackie's pre-amp is great for analog distortion. Its built-in EQ is subpar by modern standards yet is a good tool for shaping sounds!
Most of the time I work with a 3D software called Infini-D 4.5(1998) on Mac OS 9(emulated with Sheepshaver). The UI might be a bit intimidating at first glance but the key concepts are pretty much identical to those of modern softwares such as Blender. I also use Bryce 3D from time to time but not that much these days. I've been trying to get into POV-Ray lately!
Yes! I used to host my own monthly show on a local internet radio Visla FM. Now I occasionally play at small venues in Seoul with my friends(big up Dan Dara & Shins) haha. Pay a visit for some proper all-vinyl jungle sets!
I mostly only work with my friends but still feel free to send me a message. I will listen to it.
The submissions are closed as of now but I will make an announcement if that changes.
I deleted it because I wanted to focus on making music. I felt like I was wasting too much time caring about the responses haha.
Please contact me via e-mail and let me know of the details. I will do my best to help you.
Not really, it's a very very niche genre here. However Planet Turbo crew(Mordecai & Shins) have been playing a lot of good jungle in Itaewon, Seoul in recent years. Big up Planet Turbo!
